As a university tutor and academic proofreader, the whole world of language use is interesting to me. When I was studying my M.A. in Applied Linguistics, I read a module on sociolinguistics and it opened my mind to this vast, fascinating and ever-expanding area. By looking at how language is used in different contexts in different cultures and genres, it really opens your mind to new perspectives – it is almost like going “behind the scenes” of language i.e. seeing what is really at play when we say or write certain things in certain ways to certain people.
Because Internet
I recently bought a book called “Because Internet” by Gretchen McCulloch, which delivers and updates the way language is now used in the modern world of the internet, and the varied messaging forms we use on a daily basis. Interesting, she says that the social media world has opened up language and communication, so that whereas once communication was only seen as being effective if it was well-written or spoken (and so seen as a restrictive and somewhat non-inclusive genre where only people skilled in the form could participate), now with X, Instagram and messaging, we are getting a bigger and more comprehensive picture of language in the world.
